History

859 - first mention of Novgorod in ancient chronicles.

989 - conversion of Novgorod to Christianity.

1044 - Novgorod's fortress was built. The first description of Novgorod in the ancient chronicles.

1045-1050 - construction of St.Sophia Cathedral.

beginning of the XI c. - first school in Russia was founded in Novgorod.

Climate

Novgorod lies in the moderate continental climatic zone and has 4 distinct seasons, with January the coldest month and July the wormiest. the driest month is March and the wettest is June. Average rainfall is 80mm and the average snowfall is 30.7mm. Average temperature is 3 degree above zero : in summer (July) - 18 degree above zero, in winter (January) - 8 degree below zero. The summers are generally warm, but periods of extremely hot weather are rare. The spring and fall are moderate, the winters brisk without extended periods of bitter cold. Because of the varying temperatures visitors must plan wardrobes to match the season.
