Yaroslav's Court
In the south district was the princely court, also known as Yaroslav's Court,
from the name of Yaroslav the Wise who ruled Novgorod for a number of years in
the early 11th century before his accession to the Kevin throne. Here, by the
Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Novgorodian Veche held its meetings. It decided
the issues of war and peace, invited and expelled the prince, elected candidates
for administrative and military offices, concluded treaties with other
principalities, proclaimed laws, and so on.
